Characteristics of Quality Korean Ginseng
Korean Panax Ginseng is regarded one of the most prized of all traditional Asian plant species. Panax means “all-healing” in Greek, as in panacea, and it is aptly named for it’s holistic variety of beneficial effects.
In Korean and Asian cultures it’s most prized form or perfect classification is “human”, believed formed in our image. It is referred to as the “elixir of humankind”, the “plant of mystery” and it is ranked highest in oriental herbs and medicines.
Our Korean ginseng is sourced directly from Geumsan, origin of Goryeo authentic panax ginseng – the original cultivation region for over 1500 years. The Korean Ginseng grown here is of the absolute highest quality and is also well documented to have the highest number (almost 40) and concentrations of Ginsenosides of any Ginseng species in the world.
All our Ginseng is grown for 6 years to maximum potency. Furthermore, it is G marked Ginseng; authenticated to be true Geumsan ginseng of the highest quality; GAP, GMP and HACCP processed, certified and manufactured in Geumsan to the highest standards. All steps from seed to final product are done with concern for the finished product, with full traceability.
There are many varieties and grades of Ginseng in the market and Ginseng containing products. We believe in sourcing the very best product, directly, as we do with all our products.
Ginseng is consumed in many formats.
White Ginseng is fresh and sorted according to very rigid quality grade standards, then processed or ‘dried”. This dried whole tuber is often sold to other markets. Dried White Ginseng is further processed into a variety of value added formats; sliced, honeyed or candied, powdered, capsules, teas and beverages.
Red Ginseng is mature White Ginseng that is carefully steamed then dried slowly two times. This process intensifies certain Ginsenosides, and also produces several less common ginsenoside sub-types. Red Ginseng’s most prominent Ginsenosides include include Rg1, Rg3, Rb1, Rh1, and Rh2.
Black Ginseng – recent development in Korea. A careful, continuous process of steaming and drying 9 (nine) times. Ginseng transitions from White, through Red Ginseng to a to 9th steam/dry cycle, in which appearance is withered and blackened, with increased beneficial ginsenosides such as Rg3,Rk1,Rg5.
Fresh (raw) is consumed in a variety of dishes, usually as entire tubers ; ie. “stuffed fresh ginseng chicken” is a dish extremely popular in Korea.
Red Ginseng is available in a variety of formats; including sliced, honeyed or candied, powdered, capsules, teas, extracts and beverages, and is the most popular consumed format.
Black Ginseng has been more carefully studied over the past few years and found to have increased concentrations of specific Ginsenosides not found in Fresh raw, White or Red Ginseng. This process increases the natural levels of saponins in terms of both their variety (~24 to over 40) and concentration (1-2% to >8%). More Importantly, it creates much higher concentrations of specific, beneficial ginsenosides, such as Rg3,Rk1,Rg5.
Ginseng Growth and Harvesting
Ginseng takes 5-6 years for the ginsenosides in its raw form to reach their maximum concentrations. The horticulture of Ginseng is labour intensive, and soil and plant conditions must be carefully monitored throughout the growing and dormant seasons. Ginseng is a tuberous plant which requires “mounding” or hilling. It is very sensitive to drying conditions and too much sun; preferring controlled shade conditions. For these reasons Ginseng is grown in covered or tarped fields, to ensure the plants retain the required amounts of light.
Ginseng Key Ingredients
Ginseng contains hundreds of well analyzed actives. The most studied and well characterized for their health effects are the Ginsenosides or Saponins; believed to play a role in a variety of health conditions.
